Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister
Dresden, Germany
The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, housed in the neoclassical Semperbau at the Zwinger, is a splendid showcase of European art from the 15th to 18th centuries. Its collections include treasures like Raphael’s “Sistine Madonna”, brilliant works of Italian Renaissance, Dutch and Flemish Baroque—Rembrandt, Rubens—as well as German masters such as Dürer and Cranach. Internally, gallery spaces are richly appointed with colour-coordinated walls and ornate frames that contrast with stately architecture outside.
